#Mad Back - Book Review & Giveaway

#Mad Back - Book Review & Giveaway

What is this now dear readers?

Itzybellababy is reviewing books that aren't kids books?
Why yes, yes I am!

I am not sure that I am going to make it a regular thing, but I really wanted to check this book out - Mad Back by Mr. Patrick Lee.

As you know, I had a rather large baby a couple years ago ( 11 lbs, 11 oz and naturally,) and it has really caused me a lot of back and hip pain.

I have also not had good health insurance, or a job that allows me to really medically explore the roots of the issues I am having. However, when I see an opportunity to learn something I can do at home I take advantage of it!

You may not know, that in my professional life I did environmental, health and safety. One of the tasks that I did was ergonomic assessment of my coworkers. I had training, and checklists and tools to help with this practice. I mainly got called because someone was injured and needed adjustments to their work station, or because someone needed a new chair, and that was the method to get one. Lol.

So, I have seen my fair number of back injuries in the workplace. I was interested to see what Mad Back had to suggest.

What I didn't like:

First of all, I want to note that I had a very hard time with the book's introduction. The writing was hard to get through- it had grammar issues and redundant comments and it was really turning me off. I feel bad that I have to write that.

However, once I got into the MEAT of the book, the style and tone seemed to change, and I was engaged. So don't give up on this one.

What I liked:

I really liked the fact that the book tells you that if you want to explore x and y than go to chapter  z.

Some people do not need the contents of the entire book. If you have back pain, you want something now. You don't want to wait until the last chapter to be helped. You can seek out exactly what you need, and return later for the science behind it and the other relevant information.

I liked that there was a lot of information that I had not seen before. I am not going to go into detail but I have never seen a doctor say to MOVE more when there is back injury. In many cases, this alone can allow improvement. (Not every case is the same of course.) Unless there is a blown out disk or such, most people can benefit from moving the muscles. Keeping them warm, and stretched.

(This is probably the number one help that I have received from this book. I know I sit WAY too long in front of my laptop. It is my work these days, and the way I find work.. so sometimes it is unavoidable, but I know it is something I need to work on if I want to get rid of the pain!)

I also liked the fact that the author says that a regular family doctor is not the place to get back help.

You wouldn't go to a dentist for your foot, why go to a general doctor for your back?

There are so many tidbits like this in the book.

I learned a lot about the science of back pain. There are so many ways that the spine is related to your overall health and how everything is pulled together.

I know the next time I go out and do an ergonomic assessment, I will be looking at it with new eyes..

I may also take away all my coworkers' desks.. look out world! They will thank me later!

So- I will not rehash the whole book. I will however give you the advice to check it out if you have a "mad back" to see what pearls of wisdom you can take from it.  I think there is a lot to learn, and much to benefit from!

I will also say that the author seems very sincere and interested in helping his readers. It is not often that we get to interact directly with a writer, but he is very accessible!

I will give my first adult book for review 5 stars!

If you want to check out the book and the information about it, you can pick it up in hardback form-  Purchase the book at Amazon  or you can also find  Mad Back on Kindle.
