I am in the middle of summer out here in Phoenix, and unlike the East coasters, this is our hibernation season. The season where we hide indoors behind shades and with the air conditioning cranked to max. Well, at least I do. I find that I tend to get very lazy in summer. Going to the grocery store is likely to cause a sweat just walking to the car. We need something indoors (besides just hockey) for fun!
I was pleased to be offered a chance to review an online set of classes and instruction in a form of Kung Fu called Shou' Shu' .

I was not exactly sure what to expect, but I was welcomed so warmly by the folks at the site, that I was sure this was going to be great.
First of all, you get signed up to emails and forums with the owners and instructors. Your coursework is highlighted daily with the emails and you can go back and review points as needed. You then create your account online and start off with your coursework.
I was directed to start with a series of videos on the basics. Advanced memberships are what the giveaway is for. I turned them on, and cranked up the ac and set to work. I was very pleased with the material. I have had loads of video tapes of exercise classes and the instruction was on par with any produced video tape or dvd. I did about half of the first class before the toddler decided that she didn't like not being the center of attention that day (teething toddlers.. they rule the universe.) The second half of the first lesson I did with the man of the house. He thought it was a pretty nice introduction, and the toddler even let us finish the lesson!
You are walked through each lesson, step by step, and slowly build on it. You can replay, stop, pause, go back.. and even forward, although that is not suggested. You want to experience each moment, in the event that something crucial is introduced. You are learning at home- no one to show off for- just take your time!
I am not particularly coordinated so I did pause and rewind once in awhile. I like that. I really do get left behind sometimes in classes because I am a bit slow to catch stuff sometimes. (Any of my hockey coaches can attest to this.)
I have not completed all of the classes yet, but I didn't really need to take months of classes to see that this is a great way to work out, learn some self defense techniques and get some confidence in my physical movements.
You don't need to feel isolated in the living room either. If you are having a challenge, you can contact the instructors and they can run through some emails or video chat to get you set straight. They want to see you progress and they want you to succeed.
You can take your time on this, or run through the lessons quickly. It is entirely up to you. The folks at Sheng Chi Kung Fu want to give you an advance membership to try as well- enter the giveaway below!
